A frozen AC is not a "too cold" problem. It is an airflow problem that happens to show up as ice. Once you understand that one fact, everything else about a frozen coil makes sense — including why letting the system keep running usually makes it worse, not better.
How a coil actually freezes
Your indoor evaporator coil is supposed to sit a little above freezing while it is running — cold enough to pull heat and humidity out of the air passing over it. That only works if enough warm air keeps moving across the coil to keep its surface temperature in the right range. Cut the airflow, and the coil keeps getting colder with nothing to warm it back up. Eventually it drops below 32°F, the condensation on its surface turns to frost, and the frost builds on itself. What started as a small ice patch becomes a solid block within a few hours.
That is the whole mechanism: restricted airflow → falling coil temperature → ice. Almost every cause below is really just a different way of restricting airflow (or, in one case, a different way of pushing the coil's operating temperature too low to begin with).
The most common causes, in the order we actually see them
1. A dirty air filter
This is the cause behind the large majority of frozen-coil calls we run in Houston. A filter loaded with dust and pet hair chokes the air coming into the system before it ever reaches the coil. Check yours first — if you can not see light through it when you hold it up, that is your answer.
2. Closed or blocked supply vents
Furniture pushed in front of a return vent, or too many supply vents closed off to "save on cooling" in unused rooms, has the same effect as a dirty filter: less air moving across the coil.
3. A failing blower motor or blower wheel
If the filter is clean and the vents are open but the airflow still feels weak at the registers, the blower itself may be losing power, or the blower wheel may be caked with dust reducing its effective size.
4. Low refrigerant from a leak
This one works differently. Low refrigerant charge drops the pressure inside the coil, which drops its temperature independent of airflow. A system low on refrigerant will often ice up even with a clean filter and full airflow. This is also the one cause on this list that a homeowner cannot fix — it needs a leak search and a proper recharge, not just a top-off.
5. Running the system in weak fan mode or very low outdoor temperatures
Less common in Houston, but running an AC on a mild day (below roughly 60°F outdoors) can freeze a coil even on a healthy system, because the heat load is too low for the refrigerant cycle to stay in its normal operating range.
Why running it longer makes it worse
Once ice starts forming, it narrows the airflow path further, which drops the coil temperature further, which grows more ice. It is a feedback loop. Left alone long enough, the ice can block airflow almost completely, and in the worst cases liquid refrigerant returns to the compressor instead of vapor — a condition called slugging that can damage the compressor itself. A $200 filter-and-airflow fix can turn into a multi-thousand-dollar compressor repair if the system runs iced-over for days.
What to do right now if your AC is frozen
- Turn the thermostat to "off," not just a lower fan speed. The compressor needs to stop so the ice can melt.
- Set the fan to "on" (not auto) if your thermostat allows it. Circulating room-temperature air speeds up the thaw.
- Check and replace the filter while it thaws. This alone resolves the majority of cases.
- Give it 2–4 hours before turning cooling back on. Do not chip or scrape the ice — you can damage the coil fins.
- If it re-freezes after a clean filter and a full thaw, or if you are not comfortable checking any of the above, call us before running it again. Continuing to cycle a system that is actively freezing is how a filter problem becomes a compressor problem.

The pattern worth noticing
A system that freezes once, in isolation, on a day you forgot to change the filter, is a minor event. A system that freezes repeatedly is telling you it is not getting enough airflow on a structural level — and that is exactly what a maintenance visit is built to catch: filter condition, blower amperage, coil cleanliness, and refrigerant charge, checked before it becomes a same-day emergency call.
